Janie Brokenicky Janie Brokenicky is the executive director of the Flint Hills Children's Choir based in Manhattan, KS. The choir has twice been selected to perform at the Kansas Music Educators Association state conference (2020, 2017) and annually travels to collaborate with other children's choirs or participate in national festivals. The choir has performed at Carnegie Hall, with international pop star Chris Mann, and in summer 2022 will travel to Scotland.
In addition to FHCC, Janie is the 9-12 Vocal Music Director at Rock Creek High School, where she directs two choirs, assists the band, directs the Fall Musical, and teaches classes in music theory, dance, and history of Rock and Roll. She has also held positions at Riley County High School, Wamego, Tabor College, and Kansas State University as instructor of voice and music theory.
Janie is an active performer and has been a featured soloist at the Meyerson Symphony Hall (Dallas), the Kauffman Center, and the Folly Theater in Kansas City. Additionally, she has been a guest artist with the Wichita Chamber Chorale, Hays Symphony Orchestra, Flint Hills Masterworks Chorale, and served six summers as artist-in-residence for the Ad Astra Summer Music Festival. Janie enjoyed several collaborations with the K-State symphony while on the vocal faculty, and in 2017 took on the infamous role of The Queen of the Night in the KSU production of Mozart's The Magic Flute. In 2018 she collaborated with the Wichita Grand Opera as a guest soloist for both their Opera on the Lake production and Chris Mann: Home for Christmas, Part 2. This past 2021 summer she performed in the world premiere of the opera Our Trudy, commissioned for the sesquicentennial Prairiesta celebration in Russell, KS. She will join the Salina Symphony this coming season for two guest soloist performances.
Professionally, Janie has served as a guest choral clinician and adjudicator in Kansas, Missouri, and Nebraska. She served 8 years on the board for the Kansas Choral Directors Association as both chair of women's choirs and North Central representative and is the current treasurer for the organization. She holds degrees in music education, choral conducting and vocal performance, mathematics, and is an accomplished oboist.
